One Day or Day One

Matthew Galea

When do you want to start?

Why waiting for motivation might be holding you back What if the motivation you’re waiting for never comes? That’s not pessimism - it’s reality. And it might be why you haven’t started that thing you keep thinking about. Maybe it’s learning a language, prepping meals, mastering poached eggs, running 5km, reading more, getting your hands into clay, or picking up your sketchbook again.

There’s often a quiet, persistent desire inside. You imagine how great it would feel - what a personal achievement it would be. You picture yourself doing the thing, and for a moment, you smile.

Then your phone buzzes. Reality pulls you back. And suddenly, there’s a problem: you don’t feel motivated. You tell yourself, “Not today. I’ll do it when I feel inspired.”

You unlock your phone and drift into a comfortably numb scroll. (Yes, that song is playing in my head too.) You stumble across someone’s profile - they seem always on the go, always inspired, always doing more. You sigh. And scroll on.

A voice inside whispers, “Something has to change.” Another part replies, “I know… but how?” And the cycle continues.

The Myth of Motivation

We imagine the journey from inspiration to motivation to action as a straight line. We tell ourselves that if we want something badly enough, we’ll feel inspired. That inspiration will lead to motivation, and motivation to action.

But here’s the truth: that’s a romantic idea. Life gets busy. The daily humdrum takes over. And the inspiration we’re waiting for never quite arrives.

Start with Action

Here’s the shift: stop waiting to feel motivated. You don’t need inspiration to begin - because action itself can create it. The person you saw on social media? They didn’t start with motivation. They started with action. One small step. That step sparked inspiration, which led to motivation, which led to more action- and the cycle continued.

Break the Cycle-Start the Loop

So next time you think, “Something has to change,” don’t wait for the feeling to pass. Do something. Anything.

Lost touch with your sketchpad? Grab it.

Missing your friends? Send a message. Want to master poached eggs? Ask me - I’ve got tips. Motivation often begins with action. And once you start, the loop takes over.

So… What’s Your Day One?

Pick one small action - today - and let that be the spark. You don’t need to feel ready. You just need to begin.Because the difference between “One day…” and “Day One” is just one small step.
